Texas to execute hitman who killed client’s wife for life insurance money

March 7 (UPI) — Texas is scheduled on Tuesday to execute Rolando Ruiz Jr., a convicted hitman who killed the wife of his client so he could collect life insurance money in 1992.

Officials will carry out the execution in Huntsville at 7 p.m. Eastern Time.

Michael Rodriguez and his brother Mark Rodriguez paid Ruiz, 44, $2,000 to kill Theresa Rodriguez after Michael took out an additional $150,000 life insurance policy on himself and Theresa, which added to the $250,000 policy the husband and wife already had, state officials said.

As part of a plea agreement, the Rodriguez brothers were sentenced to life in prison. Ruiz was given a death sentence.

Ruiz has gotten a stay of execution twice from federal and state appeals courts. On Monday, a judge in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit denied another motion for a stay of execution filed by Ruiz’s lawyers in February.

“There’s never closure,” Eddie Sanchez, Theresa’s father, told the San Antonio Express-News. “It’s not going to bring my daughter back.”

Michael was a member of the Texas Seven, a group of prisoners who escaped from prison in Kenedy in 2000. Michael was executed in 2008 for killing a police officer after his escape.
